Greens helped to earn a big progressive victory in St. Paul, as residents voted November 3 to adopt Instant Runoff Voting for city elections. Long on our agenda, Green volunteers supported the Better Ballot Campaign with thousands of signatures, phone calls and flyers dropped at doorsteps.
Please join us at our Thanksgiving Leftovers party to celebrate!
Saturday, Nov 28, 6-9pm
At the home of Paul Busch and Clare Welter
1523 Laurel Ave in St. Paul
The Leftovers Party is a potluck - bring a dish (leftover or not) if you'd like. It's also a (very casual) fundraiser. If you can't join us, please consider making a donation to say thanks to all our Green volunteers who helped earn this victory.
A great resource for learning more is the Better Ballot Campaign

In announcing his drastic budget cuts through unallotment last week, Gov. Pawlenty killed the Political Contribution Refund Program that gives each Minnesota voter credit for a small contribution to a candidate or party of their choice. This has been a key source of funding for third parties in the state and allowed some candidates to run on lots of smaller contributions who otherwise would not.
Thanks to your generous donations online, in the mail and at our kickoff party, we've succeeded in meeting our $3,000 goal to launch the watchdog project. Watch this space for further developments.

The April 25 kickoff party was a success, featuring great food and interesting updates on green policy at the local level from Annie Young and Cam Gordon.
This week Judge McGunnigle ruled against a lawsuit that sought to halt the use of Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) in Minnesota. The Green Party has long supported IRV as a fairer, more democratic means to elect candidates, so we celebrate this result.
While opponents of IRV are likely to appeal this decision to a higher court, the initial decision sets a strong initial precedent for the constitutionality of instant runoff.
4th CD Greens are dropping literature in the coming weeks. More on the campaign at www.votetruth08.com.
One of our local Green candidates is running right across the river: Farheen Hakeem for MN House in 61B. Hakeem brings her strong campaign experience to a race for an open seat, making for a great opportunity. Find more information at www.farheenhakeem.org or call 612 395-5559 for volunteer info on her campaign. You can join them going door-to-door this weekend:
The campaign will be lit-dropping the entire district starting Nov 1.
An update from yesterday: Amy Goodman, and producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar have all been released. The Free Press is calling for all charges to be dropped against them. Updates on the case are also being posted at Democracy Now! and GregPalast.com.
The Green Party of Minnesota issued a statement late last night which was picked up by the Green Party of the United States as well:
A St. Paul Green got the following letter to the editior published in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, July 22, 2008, page 7B.
[Heading:] Council's runoff voting action defies law
Let the will of more than 7,100 St. Paul citizens be heard. They signed a petition to put instant-runoff voting on the ballot in St. Paul in November. City Council members (except Russ Stark) went against the will of the citizens they were elect[ed] to serve when they chose to ignore the signatures and not put IRV on the ballot (“Instant-runoff voting put on hold” July 30).
Summer is the perfect season to get out in public and tell your neighbors about real choice. As Greens, we support electoral reform that empowers voters to make their real choices heard at the ballot box and in government. This summer, that means supporting the campaign to use Instant Runoff Voting for local elections in St. Paul. With instant runoff, voters are freed from concerns about "spoiled elections" and candidates are encouraged to campaign on issues and record, instead of mudslinging. Learn more.
Of course, the Green Party itself represents real choice. Distinct from the two major corporate parties, Greens also support:
This summer, you can join the Green Party's efforts to promote real choice at a number of public events:
