Donate by June 30 for $50 refund - Pawlenty kills clean elections tool

In announcing his drastic budget cuts through unallotment last week, Gov. Pawlenty killed the Political Contribution Refund Program that gives each Minnesota voter credit for a small contribution to a candidate or party of their choice. This has been a key source of funding for third parties in the state and allowed some candidates to run on lots of smaller contributions who otherwise would not.

More information can be found at the MN Revenue site.

Killing PCR will reduce the already small number of third party candidates, as well as challengers in non-swing districts. Whether you think of Ken Pentel for Governor in 2002, Jesse Ventura in 1998 or Jesse Mortenson for state house in 2006, third party candidates for partisan offices up and down the ballot will be impacted.

That's the bad news. The good news is that you can still use your Contribution Refund if you donate by June 30, next Tuesday. If you donate by then you are still eligible for the full 50 dollar refund from the state of Minnesota (assuming you have not already used the PCRP this year).
